Buying a Musical Instrument

Are you thinking about buying a second-hand musical instrument?

If so, you need to check whether the seller is the legitimate owner before you buy. To do so, follow the steps below:

  1. Firstly, ask the seller whether the instrument is registered with MusicTag.

    • Registered?

Ask the seller for the instrument's Tag Code and then CHECK IT.

The Check It! system will advise you whether a Tag Code is valid or not, and whether the associated instrument is currently marked "for sale".

Don't buy the instrument unless the tag is verified "for sale".

    • Not Registered?

Ask the seller for the instrument's details, including its serial number, then CHECK IT.

The Check It! system will advise you whether the instrument is registered or not and if so, whether the registered owner has marked it "for sale".

Don't buy the instrument if it is registered to someone else.

  2. Inspect the instrument before you buy it:

    • Check the Instrument

Electric guitar Bassoon Bb clarinet Bb tuba

The type of instrument, manufacturer, model number and serial number should all match those you were given.

Don't purchase the instrument if ANY details are different to those you checked, or if the serial number has been scratched off or defaced (it is likely to be stolen).

    • Check the Certificate

      MusicTag certificate

Check the seller's MusicTag certificate for the instrument if they have one.

All details should match those found on the instrument and those you were given by the seller.

Don't purchase the instrument if the Tag Code, serial number or any other details don't match.

  3. Finally, either:

    • Buy with Confidence

Be reassured that the instrument is legitimate.

Don't forget to register the instrument in your name. Registering yourself as the new legitimate owner of the instrument will help you to protect it from loss and theft in future.

    • Report the Instrument

Report the instrument and seller if you think they are attempting to sell an instrument they don't appear to own.

We will then try to contact the legitimate owner and help them recover their stolen instrument.

Avoid stolen instruments; always check before you buy
